Hummus and Tamarind Falafel with Pita Bread

A quick meal to put together and gives a change from the daily indian meals at home 🙂 Its healthy and yummy !

I bought the Pita Bread from the store; though I know a lot of people like to make their own breads, but i prefer buying them.

Ingredients:

For Hummus:

  • Chickpeas – 200 grams
  • Lemon Juice – 2 tbsp
  • Garlic Cloves – 4
  • Ground Cumin – 1 tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Sesame Seed Paste (aka Tahini Paste) – 100 ml
  • Water – 4 tbsp
  • Olive Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Paprika – 1 tsp

For Falafel:

  • Chickpeas – 200 grams
  • Onion – 2
  • Tomatoes – 2
  • Tamarind – 1 cup
  • Salt – to taste
  • Chilly Powder – 1 tsp
  • Garam Masala – 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander Powder – 1 tsp
  • Oil – 2 tsp

Method:

For Hummus:

  1. Soak chickpeas overnight and boil them with salt
  2. Combine the chickpeas, lemon juice, crushed garlic, cumin, salt, tahini, paprika, salt (if need be) and water in a food processor, and blend to a creamy purée.
  3. Add more lemon juice, garlic, cumin or salt to taste.

For Falafel:

  1. Soak chickpeas overnight and boil them with salt
  2. Chop onions into small pieces and sauté it with oil till brown
  3. Then add the chopped tomatoes to the onions
  4. Once the onions and tomatoes are nicely sautéd add the spices to it
  5. Add chickpeas to it and mix well
  6. In a bowl soak the tamarind in hot water for 5 minutes and the strain it, to get the juice
  7. Add the tamarind juice to the chickpeas
  8. Let it cool for about an hour and then mash them
  9. Make cutlets and shallow fry them

How to make Tahini Paste:

In a mixer blend one cup of white sesame seeds with 1/4 cup of olive oil, and keep adding a table spoon of olive oil till the paste is smooth.
